good job nicholas.........

yesterday was nicholas' parent teacher conference. well, it was wonderful.. I know all kids are different but all the conferences i have had in the past have not been all that great. dont get me wrong, a.j. has made good grades he is very capable and we use to have OK conferences but you know that inevitable BUT they just had to throw into the conversation. They are using a new report card/grading system this year. they score as follows- E=excellent, S=Satisfactory, I= improvement needed, N=no effort made and points 1-4, 4 being the highest you can get and 1 the lowest and that means your child needs big time help. now that all that is out of the way i will tell you how nicholas did.
His reading he was only expected to read to level 3 and he was able to read to level 10. for that he scored advanced, excellent and a 4. onto math he was only expected to write his numbers up to 30 but he actually passed 100. so for that and other things like geometric concepts he scored advanced and a 4.
now to the part of the report card that didnt make jason very happy. nic's school alternates art and music every other year. this year its music his effort was an E but he only scored a 2 for performing with others or alone. hello, i knew that before she graded him. of course jason wants him to sing loud and clear and score 4's in that class. I could just hear that conversation with a teacher.
Teacher: well, mr.soto your son has failed math and he is almost to fail reading but one great thing he is passing music class with flying colors.

jason: oh wonderful everything sounds fantastic thank you teacher for your time today.

then jason would get up and leave the class happy as can be. I know i'm exaggerating a bit because to be honest a.j. has an A in chorus and we wont even talk about the other grades. jason is not at all happy with that.
Now p.e. for nicholas is another not so favorite of his. he again got excellent for effort but only a 2 for motor skills. the teacher laughed when i told her AJ cries when we ground him from any sports activity and nicholas cries when we want him to play a sport. go figure!
at the end the teacher said she wants to see nicholas "come out" a bit more. She understands he is shy and needs help with his self confidence so that is what we have to work on.
he does a nightly drawing in his journal and we are to write a story to go along with it. the teacher said she normally doesnt require the student to write their own story until January or February but she wants nicholas to start now because he is defiantly ready to.
she also commented that nic gets along real well with his peers but she's not surprised because she knows where he gets that from. As she is staring at me but i think thats ok because i think i can and do get along well with people. dont know about my peers because i totally think people my age are a little kooky and i choose that word because i didnt want to say stupid, lol.

YAY for nicholas. i told him how proud of him i was and later last night we were at target getting meds for brenda and i heard nic whispering something about proud. i asked him what he was talking about and he said, " i was just saying that you were proud of me." Talk about melting my heart.

Just to let you know at the PTA meeting last month we went over these new report cards. they told us for the first trimester expect 2's and MAYBE a couple 3's but more than likely would not have any 4's. by the 3rd trimester they should have all 3's and maybe a few 4's. in case you dont remember let me remind you Nicholas has all 3's and 4's. oh yeah, we wont talk about p.e. and music. so i dont have a future athlete or rock star although, i know for a fact he loves to sing and play instruments just not for the public.

Way to go, Nico Boy!! Please remind your dh that his music and pe grades were no different than Nico's at that age. If you can believe it, J hated to sing once he started school. He really was a shy little guy.
